- Symbol rate is the new term for baud. It is the number of phase
- and amplitude changes per second. v.34 choses from 6 different symbol
- rates, taking the largest one which is usable on you're particular
- connection (3429 is the largest of the 6). Disabling any symbol rate will
- cause the modem to chose the newxt largest, in this case the 3200 symbol
- rate. Using this symbol rate will prevent you from making 33.6
- connections (which doesn't matter since Hayes modems don't support this
- speed anyway), and you will require a better signal to noise ratio to make
- a connect at any speed. FWIW the 3429 symbol rate has been a MAJOR source
- of interopability problems between modems using the Rockwell datapump
- (like the Hayes) and everyone else (like USRs, Motorolas, AT&Ts, etc.)
